US Weather Update — December 10, 2025
As winter grips much of the United States, a potent storm system and Arctic air are combining to bring widespread disruptions across the northern states. From heavy rainfall in the Pacific Northwest to deep snow and ice conditions in the Upper Midwest and Rockies, many regions are under warnings — and residents are being urged to take precautions.
A powerful series of storms — fueled by an “atmospheric river” of moisture — has hammered the Pacific Northwest. Heavy rainfall has caused rivers to swell, triggering flood watches and damaging roadways. In parts of Washington and Oregon, floods and mudslides forced emergency crews into rescue operations, including water rescues. 0
Meanwhile, across the northern United States, a fast-moving winter storm, driven by a so-called Alberta Clipper system, is delivering snow, ice, and strong winds to states including North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Montana, and Wyoming. Up to 5–7 inches (12–18 cm) of snow and a light glaze of ice are forecast in some areas — raising serious concerns about travel safety. 2
At the same time, Arctic air from a shifting Polar Vortex is pushing southward, threatening freezing temperatures and winter-like conditions for much of the central and eastern US. Millions of people may face sub-freezing temperatures, snow, and icy roads in the days ahead. 4
Forecasters say conditions could worsen through mid-week. Travel delays, power outages, icy roads, and flooding are all possible — especially in the upper Midwest and Pacific Northwest. Communities are being advised to stay alert to warnings, avoid unnecessary travel, and prepare for winter hazards. 5
